historic v. ‘istoric.

TV folks: get it right. Historic has a pronounced H. Say it with me. A historic.
If you are still compelled to use “an”, for the love of all things linguistic, aspirate the H! An ‘istoric.
If you say an historic within earshot of me…don’t say I didn’t warn you.
That is all.
Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang (Freestyle)

I’m adding this Tagalog song about star-crossed love to the tiny repertoire of Filipino songs I’m able to sing. Thanks very much to Ronald of Yagoona for this find; he sang it quite admirably during a bout of open-air karaoke at Villa Khristalene in Talisay.
This song was originally performed by Ogie Alcasid. Ronald’s favourite rendition is the duet by modern pop group Freestyle (shown below).
Nais kong malaman
Bakit ngayon ka lang
Dumating
Oooh…
Nais kong malaman
Bakit ngayon ka lang
Dumating
Translation:
Why have you come just now
Why only now when my heart
Is already full
I should have known
That you would walk into my life
So that I could have waited for you
It should have been you that I held in my arms
Your hand that should have always been in mine
And not hers
Why have you come into my life just now
Undoing this heart of mine that is already taken
It’s you that should have been right for me
And her that I should have forgotten
Oh please tell me
Why only now
It should have been you that I held in my arms
Your hand that should have always been in mine
And not hers
And not hers
Why have you come into my life just now
Undoing this heart of mine that is already taken
It’s you that should have been right for me
And her that I should have forgotten
Oh please tell me
Why just now…
Why have you come into my life just now
Undoing this heart of mine that is already taken
It’s you that should have been right for me
And her that I should have forgotten
Oh please tell me
Why just now
Oooh…
I really want to know
Why is it just now
That you’re here
Your Universe (Rico Blanco)

Another music find from our stay in Manila. It was one of the most frequently aired videos at the time but the first play already had me hooked. The video, shot in Tagaytay with Taal Volcano in the background, caught my attention due to our recent sojourn to said volcano. Lyrics are romantic simplicity; if anyone happened to serenade me with this song, I think I’d melt into a puddle of giggly goo. I also have to admit that even with my inclination to by turned off by Filipino men, Rico Blanco is not at all hard on the eyes.
Wish I had the presence of mind to grab the CD while we were in the Philippines. Can’t buy it from abroad. Pout.
Tell me something
When the rain falls on my face
How do you quickly replace
It with a golden summer smile?
Tell me something
When I’m feeling tired and afraid
How do you know just what to say
To make everything alright?
I don’t think that you even realize
The joy you make me feel when I’m inside your universe
You hold me like I’m the one who’s precious
I hate to break it to you but it’s just the other way around
You can thank your stars all you want but
I’ll always be the lucky one
Tell me something
When I’m ’bout to lose control
How do you patiently hold my hand
And gently calm me down?
Tell me something
When you sing and when you laugh
Why do I always photograph
My heart flying way above the clouds?
I don’t think that you even realize
The joy you make me feel when I’m inside your universe
You hold me like I’m the one who’s precious
I hate to break it to you but it’s just the other way around
You can thank your stars all you want but
I’ll always be the lucky one
Woo…
I don’t think that you even realize
The joy you make me feel when I’m inside your universe
You hold me like I’m the one who’s precious
I hate to break it to you but it’s just the other way around
You can thank your stars all you want but
I’ll always be the lucky one
You can thank your stars all you want but
I’ll always be…
The lucky one
I’ll always be the lucky one
I’ll always be the lucky one
Almost Lover (A Fine Frenzy)

I first heard this song while we were driving down a lonely stretch of road in Manila, early in our month-long trip to Asia. The lyrics were so melancholy and the singer so haunted that I was spellbound for the entire song. Made a note to seek out this artist at the first opportunity.
Your fingertips across my skin
The palm trees swaying in the wind
Images
You sang me Spanish lullabies
The sweetest sadness in your eyes
Clever trick
I never want to see you unhappy
I thought you’d want the same for me
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I’m trying not to think about you
Can’t you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
I should’ve known you’d bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do
We walked along a crowded street
You took my hand and danced with me
Images
And when you left you kissed my lips
You told me you’d never ever forget these images, no
I never want to see you unhappy
I thought you’d want the same for me
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I’m trying not to think about you
Can’t you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
I should’ve known you’d bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do
I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
Without you on my mind
So you’re gone and I’m haunted
And I bet you are just fine
Did I make it that easy
To walk right in and out of my life?
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I’m trying not to think about you
Can’t you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
I should’ve known you’d bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do
