dave’s germanesque housewarming.

By Karen | Sunday, September 24th, 2006 | No Comments »

Kurt and I are still recovering from the drunken debauchery of Dave’s housewarming. Someone brought little shot bottles of plum vodka from Germany (see video). We participated in a few rounds, but that wasn’t what induced a two-day hangover. It was more the mixing of these little feigling shots, apfel shots, red wine (a suprisingly good wolf blass shiraz), and a little too much chardonnay post-party, during a Vancouver vs. Winnipeg 90’s Trivial Pursuit game.

My score on The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test:

style="font-size:18pt;font-weight:bold;">Pure Nerd /> style="font-size:12pt">(78 % Nerd, 39% Geek, 26% Dork) />

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the “dork.” No-longer. Being smart isn’t as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

anybody for lindy hopping?

By Karen | Friday, September 22nd, 2006 | 5 Comments »

I have been ignoring one of my two dance passions. It’s been nearly two years since the last time I went swing dancing, and the pain of withdrawal has been slowly but surely building. And since Jason sent me this amazing lindy video, I’m thinking that it’s time to ditch salsa for a couple of weeks and get re-acquainted with the swing scene in Vancouver. Who’d be up for it?

back from winnipeg.

With all the web development I’ve been doing for work lately, I haven’t been blogging much. Who wants to spend 10 hours a day in front of a bunch of websites and then go home and “play with internets” for another few hours? Not me.

This past weekend, we flew to Winnipeg for Cathy and Michael’s wedding. A good, drunken time was had by all (some more than others, according to the photos…).

hong and kurt

Our flight schedule was pretty tight, so the wedding took up the most of our visit. It was also great to see my in-laws’ new home, eat at our favourite Winnipeg restaurant, and experience the usual love-allergy relationship with the family cat.

The only downside of the weekend was that WestJet “forgot” our luggage at the Saskatoon terminal during our questionable Vancouver-Edmonton-Saskatoon-Winnipeg flight path. Nearly $2000 in new wedding outfits and my salsa-dancing essentials kit (dance shoes and contacts) didn’t get to us until 4 hours before the wedding. That meant no salsa dancing with Melissa on Friday. Cry cry. I’ll make it up to you soon, my dear!
