La Dueña Del Swing (Los Hermanos Rosario)
By Karen | Sunday, April 30th, 2006 | No Comments »
A mí me gusta ver
con la sabrosura
con que esa morena
mueve la cintura
A mí me gusta ver
con la sabrosura
con que esa morena
mueve la cintura
Y a mí me gusta ver
su delicadeza
una mano en la cintura
y otra en la cabeza
Y a mí me gusta ver
su delicadeza
una mano en la cintura
y otra en la cabeza
Cuando llega al baile
llama la atención
y en el escenario
ella se roba el show
Baila con su estilo
como un figurín
por eso es que yo digo
que esa negra tiene swing
A mí me gusta ver
con la sabrosura
con que esa morena
mueve la cintura
A mí me gusta ver
con la sabrosura
con que esa morena
mueve la cintura
Cuando llega al baile
llama la atención
y en el escenario
ella se roba el show
Baila con su estilo
como un figurín
por eso es que yo digo
que esa negra tiene swing
Y tiene, swing
Y baila, swing
Y goza, swing
Que lindo, swing
Y tiene, swing
Y baila, swing
Y goza, swing
Que lindo
swing, swing, swing…
Y tiene, swing
Y baila, swing
Y goza, swing
Que lindo, swing
Y tiene, swing
Y baila, swing
Y goza, swing
Que lindo
swing, swing, swing
Moviendo la cadera
Moviendo la cadera
Moviendo la cadera
Moviendo la cadera
a la derecha, a la izquierda
a la derecha, a la izquierda
a la derecha, a la izquierda
a la derecha
Moviendo la cadera
Moviendo la cadera
Moviendo la cadera
Moviendo la cadera
a la derecha, a la izquierda
a la derecha, a la izquierda
a la derecha, a la izquierda
swing, swing, swing
Y tiene, swing
Y baila, swing
Y goza, swing
Que lindo, swing
Y tiene, swing
Y baila, swing
Y goza, swing
Con mucho
swing, swing, swing
Moviendo la cadera

New blog category: mmm, food.
By Karen | Saturday, April 29th, 2006 | No Comments »
Surprised it took this long to make this category considering how obsessed (right, Lumi?) I have been over food and food photography lately. Surreal just posted his Round 3 picks of top Winnipeg eateries (Round 1; Round 2). To supplement, below are my picks:
1) FUDE – Osborne Village eatery on the 2nd floor, near Papa George’s. Best steak I’ve had in town…and we’ve eaten at Rae & Jerry’s and La Vieille Gare. Everything else on the menu and wine list is terrific, although I tend to oscillate between this dish and the Boomerang Goreng. We love this place so much that we eat here every time we visit the Peg.
2) ALYCIA’S – Great Ukrainian restaurant in West Kildonan, famous for being frequented by John Candy. The perogies are to die for. If you like goulash and borscht I think you’ll really enjoy this place.
3) WASABI – I prefer the one in Osborne Village over the hoity-toityness of the one on Broadway. Even having been back in Vancouver and eating fresh-off-the-boat sushi every week, I get cravings for Wasabi’s specialty makis and their chopped scalloped cone. Price-wise they’re much higher than what I’m used to paying in Vancouver. But definitely better bang for your buck than going to Meiji (that place is a rip-off!).
4) STELLA’S – Awesome breakfast fare at good prices. I still crave their berry jam, which they sell in jars from the Osborne village location. The other one is on Grant and Kenaston.
5) JUVIAN’S – The only place I’ve been to in Winnipeg for Filipino breakfast, but damn was it good! I had the sampler combo, which is highly rated if you’ve never tried Filipino food before. All the combos are under $6 because Filipino stuff is always cheap
Located within the front of the Balmoral Hotel on Notre Dame.
6) RED LANTERN – Tiny little french dive in St. Boniface that has a $17 steak that tastes like $30. Still prefer Fude and La Vieille Gare but those are pricier. Rated by Frommers.
7) VJ’S DRIVE-IN – Burger joint near the Forks that is another place we frequent whenever we are in town. Try the VJ Special: I cannot believe how fantastic chili is on a burger! Milkshakes are terrific and the fries are super crunchy. Make sure to bring cash cause I don’t think they accept anything else.
MAGIC THAILAND – Incredible Thai place off the beaten path on Logan. My favourite is the green curry chicken soup. It is so hot that I have to order it as 1 (out of a hotness scale of 10). Perhaps it’s because it’s already using green curry, or that soups are more intensely flavoured than normal dishes.
9) IVORY – The only all-you-can-eat buffet I found in Winnipeg (about $25). Wonderful East Indian cuisine that rivals anything I’ve tasted here in Vancouver. Love love love the Beef Vindaloo!
On Surreal’s Greek pick, Niko’s — it’s unfortunately bottom-rung for me. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by growing up around authentic ethnic restaurants, and Greek is one of my favourites. (A great one in Vancouver is Paros Taverna…drool)
Niko’s was the first time I was served “greek salad” with lettuce leaves and ranch dressing. The real deal involves a whackload of cucumber, loads of tomatoes, onions, and kalamata olives, and a viniagrette. No lettuce to be found. The other strike for me was that the kalamari was called “fried squid” on the menu. (shrug) I am a food snob!
Check out my food gallery on Flickr if you haven’t yet. It’s got pics of food from local restaurants as well as what we’ve tried in our own kitchen or been served by friends and family.

4:20?
By Karen | Thursday, April 20th, 2006 | 2 Comments »
Today, according to The Hour, is the pothead’s holiday, in light of being April (04) 20th. Colour me naive, but I had not heard this concept of “4:20″ before. The closest I’ve ever come to doing drugs was getting helplessly hotboxed at a friend’s birthday party. That jumbo box of Cheerios really did hit the spot that night.
Can anyone enlighten me about this 4:20 deal?
camera-happy long weekend.

Too many photo and video jaunts to describe this weekend. Follow the links below. I’m sure the pics and clips will speak for themselves.
Friday:
Saturday
- *update* Dogsitting little Spazz for the first time
- Dinner at El Caravan (photos) (dinner music – clip) (bellydancing clip 1)
Sunday
Kurt’s Easter Egg Hunt:
Feels like springtime.
By Karen | Tuesday, April 11th, 2006 | No Comments »
I know that it technically is springtime but with all the rain it’s been too dismal to enjoy it. Looks like it’s turning around…
- I saw a bee today. A horrible, stinging, buzzing, bumblebee. It’ll only get worse. Karen : wasps as Stephen Colbert : bears. Hmm…that would be an interesting SAT question.
- The bonsai that Ian gave us a few weeks ago is starting to sprout on seemingly done-for branches. Pics on Flickr. Looks like Kurt’s green thumb is overcoming the presence of my black one. Yippee!
- Everything is alive with pastel-ity. Green shoots, pink cherry blossoms, tulips, daffodils. Almost makes up for the bees and wasps. Almost
- Clucking bunnies and the plethora of chocolate easteriety has arrived. While I have never been a fan of Cadbury Cream Eggs, those mini-eggs are super yummy.
Weekend of gastronomic adventure.

As part of our wine-tasting series (for our wedding reception), Kurt and I have been trying out new recipes to pair with our weekend white and red wine selections. Saturday was an excellent ahi-tuna dish encrusted with sesame, and Sunday was a roast lamb with a whipped red pepper emulsion. I am usually anti-tuna (except for tuna salad) so the ahi recipe must be fantabulous!
There are a number of weekend pics, some of them not food-related, so browse through them at your leisure.
Marketing lunch at Hon’s.

Our team went out for a great lunch at the Hon’s in Chinatown. As per usual, I went camera-crazy….
Some more Urban Beat promotion.
By Karen | Wednesday, April 5th, 2006 | No Comments »
I found out that one of my favourite dance partners, Laureano, is the author of an article on the history of salsa that I had posted to my other blog. It’s part of a larger article by Urban Beat Dance Co, written for beginner salseros. You can jump directly to Laureano’s section if you like–very interesting!
Since Urban Beat and the people I’ve met there have been instrumental in my falling back in love with salsa, I hope you will be intrigued enough to take a look at their website and try a class or two. Raf, Albert, and I have all taken lessons there and it’s almost like a little family to go to the salsa mixer on Wednesdays.
That’s my testimonial! Go check them out: Urban Beat Dance Co.
Better blog before I forget these rambles.

1. If you know me well, you are already disturbed by my attraction to strange-looking men. I can proudly say that none of them are on this list! So there. Pfft.
2. As a follow-up to 1, I’ve recently learned of not one, but TWO indviduals who agree that Alan Rickman is one of the hottest Englishmen to have sneered sexily at us from the big screen. You are not alone, ladies. Let’s see if I can dig up that $5 AR biography I bought in a moment of celebrity lust.
3. I want to adopt a new grandfather (gotta have watched Scrubs to know what I’m talking about). Melissa lent me her Buena Vista Social Club DVD and Ibrahim Ferrer is just about the cutest, oldest, black-eyed-est little Cubano that I ever did see! Can’t I take him home and feed him applesauce? Please?? Oh wait, he’s dead. Booo.
4. See my salsa site: added the lyrics and English equivalent of “Candela” as performed by the BVSC and subtitled by the DVD folks. As I can’t take credit for the translation, I bet it’s pretty good. [Update July 2007: this site no longer exists now that I have consolidated everything under karenhamilton.ca]
