Kurt’s birthday dinner masterpiece.

By Karen | Monday, October 31st, 2005 | No Comments »

Just wanted to share the yummy visuals from the French dinner Kurt made on Saturday. Click on the images to zoom in and see further descriptions. I already yapped about them in Flickr–too lazy to duplicate effort.

Happy Halloween!

Here’s a point and click treat for all of you for those of you who grew up with the Garfield Halloween Specials each year.

Garfield’s Scary Scavenger Hunt

A salsa-riffic 26th birthday.

By Karen | Saturday, October 29th, 2005 | 3 Comments »

Yesterday marked the 26th year of my existence, and thanks to everyone who made it such a memorable day.

The fun started at work when my coworker gifted me with a dark chocolate lollipop that said “Happy birthday”. It looked very yummy, but the tub of gummie bears at our desks had to go first. I plan on eating this lollipop today..thanks Lorne!

Some of the folks in Sales invited us out in the afternoon for drinks at Dix. I ran home to grab my camera, which the coworkers also took a crack at. Ivy took a great panoramic video of the scene (much to the chagrin of the others, I think!):

Staggered back home after only 2 beers (I’m a cheap beer drunk) and took a little drunken nap until we were ready for dinner. Jay, Chris, and my brother Kyle joined Kurt and I at Josephine’s for some yummy Filipino food. Very proud of Chris for expanding his culinary horizons with Filipino BBQ chicken ["barrr-beh-coo chee-ken] and the “lechon” (roast pig). When Tita Josephine found out it was my birthday, she gave us all dessert on the house, called “halo halo”. It’s a sort of mixed smoothie with shaved ice, vanilla ice cream, red jello and red/mung beans. Very good. If you ever want to try out some Filipino cuisine, I highly recommend her restaurant over on Main and 11th.

Next stop: the Polish Hall for a night of salsa dancing! Kurt and I met with Grover, Ivy, Albert, and Tito JR for the beginner lesson at 9pm. Took lots of photos and a bit of video:

The rest of the dancers started coming after the lesson. My cousin Leanne came by as well to merengue with us for a bit before her graveyard shift. Ivy and Grover took a clip of Bill and I dancing near the start of the night:

The absolutely fantastic thing about last night was seeing my friends getting interested in salsa. It totally made my day to share my passion for dancing with people I care about. Ivy was a hit with the dancers and was never lacking for partners. Grover brought some friends and really picked up some great moves from my dancer friend Jason. So hopefully we’ll be seeing Ivy, Albert, and Grover et al on the dance floor again soon!

The link to the original video clip has disappeared, so I’m reposting this and pointing to Google Video’s search for “street fighter salsa”. Hope you get a video in return.

Lola’s early birthday party.

By Karen | Saturday, October 22nd, 2005 | 3 Comments »

Thanks to the earliness of my birthday present, we have tons of photo/video goodness from my grandmother’s party today, which lasted from lunchtime to long after we left at 9pm. As usual, there was lots of food, lots of company, and lots of laughter.

Click here for the photo gallery, or see below:

Here are some clips of of the party:

Lola’s party was today as Tito Edwin will be out of town next weekend, and since my cousin Mark’s birthday party is next Saturday. I am not doing much besides salsa dancing on the 28th, and whatever Kurt has in mind for the two of us on Saturday.

Happy birthday, everyone!

La Habanera.

By Karen | Saturday, October 22nd, 2005 | No Comments »

This song from Carmen is in my head, particularly in the style of Filippa Giordano. Thanks to Dave and Lawrence for introducing me years ago to her rendition of one of my favourite arias.

Enough drooling–time to play.

Happy early birthday to me! Kurt in his infinite generosity allowed me to have at my long-hungered-for camera yesterday. Now fully equipped with Lowepro camera bag and 512MB stick. You’ll be seeing a lot more posts in the “photoblog” category now (sorry).

Peruse our tests taken on the included, but itty-bitty, 16MB stick last night.

Found “the dip”!

By Karen | Monday, October 17th, 2005 | 1 Comment »

Update–October 17, 2006

Bumping this post back up now that I’ve had the time to take screenshots of some of the fancier dips in the video. Enjoy!

Thanks to the wonder that is Google Video, I have finally located a visual of the salsa dip that I have been long craving.

Demo of salsa dips in the Bilatino club. – Google Video

The video quality sucks crap but you salseros should be able to see how the move works. It’s the second dip in the video sequence (not pictured above).

Mind you, I wouldn’t mind being dipped in any of the ways shown here!

Canon joy.
